Ukrainian Women Wore Amazing Flower Crowns Way Before It Was Cool
They've recently been revived to spread an important message.
Even if you haven't been to a music festival like Coachella or Lollapalooza, you know that flower crowns have been a festival fashion staple for years. They're fun, cool and stylish—what's not to love?!
But perhaps you didn't know that the history of flower crowns has a deeper meaning than a Lana Del Rey music video. The floral headdresses were once traditionally worn by Ukrainian women and now, Treti Pivnia—a Slavic workshop—has been bringing them back to make a powerful political statement.
Floral headdresses used to be worn by young, unmarried Ukrainian women to show their purity.
Now, a Slavic workshop of stylists and photographers are bringing them back to honor their country's culture.
While tensions have been rising between Russia and Ukraine, solidarity in the country is more important than ever.
Model Nadiia Shapoval told Vogue that "fashion is starting to react on wars."
"I think we are coming back to floral themes because fashion is starting to react on wars that we are having around the globe," she said. "We need some tenderness."
While Nadiia wasn't involved in the project, she acknowledges the cultural significance behind the floral headdresses, which really are quite amazing.
Here are a few more young women wearing the traditional flower crown, which TBH, knock any Urban Outfitters crowns out of the park.
