On April 21, 2016 the world lost a legend
Prince (whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson) suddenly passed away at age 57, which shocked the world. The iconic singer was found unresponsive in an elevator at his home. While the cause of death was not determined at this time, weeks before his death, Prince was hospitalized for an illness he had been battling for quite some time.
Officials have now confirmed that Prince died of an opioid overdose
An autopsy was conducted the day after his death, but the results weren't released until just now. According to CNN, the confirmed cause of death was a drug overdose.
An attorney for Prince's half-siblings revealed that he had an addiction to Percocet decades before he died. One of them said he started using the drugs to cope with anxiety of performing, but not recreational use.
It sounds like his family and friends were aware of his addiction, which is incredibly sad. The day before he died his team reportedly called an opioid addiction specialist seeking urgent help for him.
