This Guinea Pig's Back Was Broken, But Thanks To Some Loving Hands He's Going To Be Okay

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

For the love of god people, if your infants still don't yet understand the concept of pain, then don't them play with a small animal.

It's unfortunate when any animal is injured, but it's particularly so when it's avoidable. Such is the case for guinea pig, Estella.

A young child who was playing with her squeezed her so hard her back broke, paralyzing her from the waist down immediately.

To make matters worse, Estella was left on the side of the road by the owners. After being picked up and taken into a local shelter, she then went an entire month without treatment for her injuries. But finally, Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary came to her rescue.

After treating Estella for her injuries, as the first shelter should've done, Harvest took things one step further and raised the money needed to build her a custom "wheelchair."

“The chair is now built but we need to make a few more adjustments for her to ride,” Christine Morrissey, sanctuary manager at Harvest Home, told The Huffington Post. “The wheelchair is designed as an exercise mechanism ... to increase her enrichment and activity level.”

Not only did Harvest Home provide Estella with the chance to be mobile again, they also adopted her "beau" Pip, who was abandoned on the side of the road with her.

“A volunteer at the shelter reached out to to see if we could rescue the pair,” Morrissey said. “Of course, we said yes.”

Now, the adorable pair are finally getting the love and care they deserve, and soon Estella will be able to "wheel around" and enjoy all that life has to offer her.

Moral of the story? If your small child has yet to understand how to gently play with small animals, then don't let them. Injuries like the one Estella sustained are completely preventable if responsible parenting is implemented.

Be sure to check out all the amazing work Harvest Home is doing for other animals too.
