This Guy Couldn't Stand Leaving His Dogs, So Created a Kayak They Could Fit In

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

When you're a dog owner and it's in your power to spend more time with your dog, you make it happen. It's what you do. Even if it means having to rebuild a kayak for them.

David Bahnson couldn't bear watching the sad looks on his dogs' faces when he'd leave to go kayaking, so eventually, he felt compelled to do something about it.

The 67-year-old retiree ended up building a custom, dog-friendly kayak that both his Goldens could comfortably fit in. You know, because he's a boss and he loves his dogs.

Bahnson—a Vermont native—made the boat by converting two of the baggage compartments into seats for his two furry companions, Ginger and Susie.
And not only are they in love with being out on the water, they follow their master and commander's every instruction.

"They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go. When we come ashore, they’ll stay seated until I tell them it's OK to get out," Bahnson said in an interview with The Dodo.

Now, Ginger and Susie really do follow Brahnson everywhere he goes, and he couldn't be happier about it.

“Our dogs have always loved to travel with us in cars, in my airplane, in boats,” he told the Huffington Post UK. “Building a way for them to kayak with us just seemed like a logical choice,” he said.

A logical choice indeed. But we wouldn't blame him if he did because he just wanted to spending more father-dog quality time.
