How One Company Is Showing The Broken India Behind The Public Facade

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Part of the reason awareness of major issues in other countries isn't high is because they're not shared enough. Often times to maintain tourist appeal, they're hidden.

When it comes to downplaying or concealing national issues like poverty and pollution, India is one of the best. Sites like Beautiful India give misleading depictions of the country's overall health and wellbeing.

Singapore-based media company Limitless is determined to reveal a fuller picture.

With their photo series "Broken India," Limitless strives to show people the side of India that isn't often publicized - the broken side.
Beautiful India isn't violating any rules by only showing the beauty in India, but it certainly isn't bringing attention any of the national issues like poverty and pollution.
The reality is, despite all its beauty and rich culture and renowned sights, there is still an immense amount of poverty in India.

Despite it's staggering recent growth in GDP, India continues to be one of the most impoverished 'developed' countries. According to Poverties.org, nearly 50% of Indians don’t have proper shelter, and roughly 35% of households don’t have a nearby clean water source.

The pictures don't always show India at its worse, and that's because Limitless wasn't going for "shock and awe" - which isn't as effective as you might think.
Rather, they aim to simply show the other side of things - a fuller picture...
An image they hope will generate conversation around India's all too repressed national issues...
And bring to light not just its beauty, but the other side too.

“By bringing Broken India to light, we really wanted to strike a raw nerve,” Limitless told Buzzfeed. “Only when people realise the state of affairs and break out of their comfort zones, is when they can start to make a difference. A bit of negativity is essential for positive change.”
